Sejong University (President: Eom Jong-hwa) announced that Sejong Museum Gallery Hall 1 will hold a solo exhibition by artist Choi Young-joo, who is active in the United States, from August 20 to 31, 2025. The exhibition will showcase over 40 paintings that explore the layers of light, time, and memory, expressing existence, circulation, and cosmic connectivity.
After graduating from Hongik University’s College of Fine Arts in Korea, Choi moved to the United States and has consistently exhibited in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto, establishing herself on the international stage. Her work, centered on painting, expands through installations and mixed-media approaches, creating “landscapes of suspended time” where the past and the present coexist on canvas.
Art critic Jang So-hyun commented, “Her paintings feature empty chairs, blue spaces, and lines connecting stars to one another. These lines extend infinitely beyond the exhibition space. The empty chair symbolizes a seat of existence, carrying the message that we must decide for ourselves in what form we will sit in that place.”
A representative of Sejong Museum Gallery added, “Through the artist’s works, which embody themes of light, time, memory, and cosmic connectivity, we hope to provide visitors with a space for reflection on the origins of life and existence. The abstract flow of colors and images in her work will allow viewers to encounter a world that continuously circulates and connects.”
