Thin Lae Phyu of Hospitality, Tourism, & Food Service Management Wins Grand Prize at the 2nd International Day for Tolerance Short-Form Video Contest
Thin Lae Phyu, a student in the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism, & Food Service Management, won the Grand Prize at a short-form video contest held in celebration of the International Day for Tolerance.
Hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Dongbu Foreign Residents Center, the “2nd International Day for Tolerance Commemorative Event” was organized to promote a social atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect between immigrants and Korean citizens in an increasingly multicultural society.
At the event, an awards ceremony for a youth short-form video contest on the theme of “Attitude and Practice of Tolerance” was held. The Grand Prize was jointly awarded to Myanmar-born student Thin Lae Phyu and participants Gyuhee Park and Yoonji Kim. Their video humorously highlighted cultural differences, illustrating that “crossing one’s arms is considered a gesture of respect in Myanmar, but may be misunderstood in Korea,” earning high praise.
Drawing from cultural differences experienced in daily life, Thin Lae Phyu created a piece that conveys the importance of mutual understanding and communication in a multicultural society.
This award is seen as a testament to the School of Hotel, Tourism and Foodservice Management’s commitment to multicultural awareness and global communication competencies. The school plans to continue supporting students through diverse programs that integrate major coursework with extracurricular activities to help them grow into globally competitive professionals.
Reflecting on the experience, Thin Lae Phyu said, “Preparing this piece made me think deeply about the meaning of tolerance—respecting and understanding our differences. I worked hard to convey a message of empathy and respect within a short video,” adding, “I will continue to take on new challenges to further promote the value of tolerance following this award.”
