Professor Benjamin L’Huillier of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and PhD researcher Cléa Millard supervised students from Lycée Français de Séoul in their participation in the French National Physics Olympiads.

After passing the preliminary round, the students advanced to the national finals and traveled to Paris last weekend, where they achieved an outstanding result by winning third place.

During the competition, the students demonstrated the accelerating expansion of the universe — the subject of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics — using modern cosmological datasets. They showed a precise understanding of complex concepts in cosmology and data analysis that extend beyond the high school curriculum, and effectively explained their findings.

While staying in Paris, the students also had the opportunity to visit the Académie des Sciences and the Paris Observatory, gaining first-hand exposure to world-leading scientific research institutions.

This activity was jointly planned and supervised by Professor Benjamin L’Huillier and researcher Cléa Millard, and is regarded as an exemplary case of international academic exchange and the cultivation of future scientific talent.
