Professor Seok-Pyo Hong from the Department of Quantum and Nuclear Engineering received the Excellent Paper Award at the Spring Conference of the Materials and Fracture Division, hosted by the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers. The conference was held from June 25 to 27 at the KAL Hotel in Seogwipo, Jeju.
The award was given for the paper titled "Proposal of Plastic Collapse Load Relationship for a Curved Pipe with Circumferential Through-Wall Crack under Internal Pressure, In-Plane Bending, and Out-of-Plane Bending Loads," which was presented at the 2024 conference. The paper was co-authored by Professor Hong as the corresponding author and graduate student Dongjun Kim as the first author.
This research holds significant value as a quantitative structural analysis study with high practical applicability in industrial settings. Based on simulation-driven computational analysis and structural integrity assessment techniques, the team demonstrated the feasibility of applying their method to real-world high-risk industrial piping systems.
In particular, the researchers proposed a new formula capable of quantitatively predicting the plastic collapse behavior of curved pipes with through-wall cracks under combined loading conditions. The study received high praise for its practical implications, such as enhancing the structural safety assessment of power plants and optimizing preventive maintenance cycles for high-risk facilities.
Professor Hong commented,
“This award represents not only an academic achievement, but also recognition from both academia and industry for practical technology development through a start-up company. I will continue striving to advance structural analysis technologies that can enhance safety and reliability in industrial environments.”
